Changing the story at Luminosity Youth Summit

pencil Posted 05th August

Recently we joined hundreds of amazing young people for the Luminosity Youth Summit, exploring PURPOSE and POSSIBILITY!

At Liberty’s Masterclass, Brooke, Kelly and Dave inspired an incredible group to ‘Change the Story’ and come up with creative ways to stop the condoning of violence against women, challenge rigid gender stereotypes and support the development of positive and safe relationships.

Together we unpacked some of the misinformed beliefs and attitudes that contribute to violence against women:

  • 34% of young men feel social pressure to use violence to get respect
  • 26% of young people said that women who stay with their abusive partners are partly responsible for the abuse continuing
  • 38% of young people think women exaggerate how unequally they are treated
  • When compared to those aged 25 and older, young people were significantly more likely to excuse the perpetrator if he was drunk or affected by drugs

Masterclass participants designed campaigns to shift community attitudes towards violence, normalise respectful relationships, and raise awareness of the negative impacts of outdated gender roles and identities.

Our young people are our future. And if this positive and proactive group is anything to go by, it is in safe hands!
